Mackenzie GoreSurprising no one, The Columbus County Sports Network has named Whiteville High’s Mackenzie Gore as their 2016 Columbus County Baseball Player of the Year. Gore joins Nathan Hood (2013), Zack Pait (2014) and Turner Brown (2015) as winners of this award.

It has been well-documented that Gore allowed just one run in 80+ innings pitched in the 2016 season. He averaged 14 stikeouts and less than one walk per game. Gore also batted over .310 from his leadoff position and was a plus defender in the outfield.

Gore is a rising senior. He has committed to East Carolina to continue his baseball career.

Wednesday, Gore was one of 50 members of the class of 2017 to be selected to participate in the Perfect Game All-American Classic. The game will be held at Petco Park in San Diego, August 14. The MLB Network will carry the game live at 8 p.m. EDT.

It wasn’t game conditions, but it did give Coach Maurice Huey some idea about the conditioning of some of his football players. Observations like, “We can’t afford for you to take a play off because you are tired,” or “If you came to the workouts you would be in better shape,” were heard.

Coach Huey administered some “tough love” in correcting some mistakes, especially on the defensive side. However, his tone was positive and he was upbeat throughout the scrimmage with the 4A Golden Bulls.
