Whiteville High School begins defense of its Columbus Cup championship today with a girls tennis match at South Columbus. Even without Columbus Cup points at stake, this match would draw a lot of interest. Both squads return a number of players from last season including South’s 2015 TRC Player of the Year Mary Grayson Koonce and Whiteville’s #1 seed Chase Barnhill. Barnhill had the best #1 singles record in conference play during 2015.

East Columbus travels to West Columbus in girls tennis with Cup points at stake on Tuesday.

Vikings Celebrate Triumph, Birthday

P1280835West Columbus senior Larramie Whitehead has not experienced many wins on the volleyball court during her West Columbus career. However, Wednesday’s straight set win over West Bladen could be an indication that better days are ahead for Larramie and her teammates. The cherry on top was the win came on Larramie’s birthday. Whitehead was also named to the UNC-P Black & Gold Volleyball Classic All-tournament team last weekend.

West Columbus took the lead mid-first set and held on for a 25-20 win. The Vikings trailed early in the second set but rallied for a 26-24 win. The final set was nip and tuck early, but West Columbus pulled away for a 25-19 win. Junior, Angela Tiffany, was instrumental in the win. Tiffany’s strong service game was a key in several Viking runs. Whitehead, Peyton Sasser and KK Horne each had strong offensive games, while Kasey Collins, Greyanna Booth, Lexi Bowen and Willow Stackhouse led the defense.
